Thermal engines and systems


Thermal engines : Reference points on energy (sources, chains, convention, storage), reminder of heat transfer modes, moist air, air conditioning process and thermal engines.


Thermal systems : The program supports a design project of a system of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) for a building and another one for an aircraft. Are introduced the concepts of human comfort, technological schemes of HVAC systems, and estimated the thermal loads (for the building) and pressurization, fresh air, heating, cooling (for the aircraft). Finally elements of the air conditioning system are sized.


Computational Fluid Dynamics : Initiation to the CFD code Fluent. Numerical simulation of one of the components of a thermal system, in the framework of a project done by groups of 2 students.


At the end of this module, the student will have understood and be able to explain the basics of thermal power generation systems and the related machinery.


The student will be able to :

-    Estimate the thermal load of a large room and size the associated heating, ventilation and air conditioning system.

-    Calculate the needs of conditioning air flow to perform various functions (pressurization, fresh air, heating, cooling) for an airplane and adjust the recirculation and flow distribution between the different cabin zones.

-    Size a thermal engine to meet the required power specifications.

Needed prerequisite

Basics of thermodynamics and heat transfer.

Form of assessment

The evaluation of outcome prior learning is made as a continuous training during the semester. According ot the teaching, the assessment will be different: as a written exam, an oral exam, a record, a written report, peers review...
