Objectives


At the end of this module, the student will have understood and be able to explain (main concepts) :
- the global context for power-generating industries
- the regulatory and technology context of the various forms of renewable energy (wind, photovoltaic, biomass ...)
- the different thermodynamic cycles associated with thermal power plants, refrigeration systems, heat-pump systems and gas liquefaction,
- the use of energy and exergy balances for these thermodynamic systems in order to optimize their operation.
The student will be able to:
- design a thermal power plant, including the choice of working fluid, operating temperatures and pressures, the determination of flow rates, plus the preliminary design of compressors and turbines
- design a refrigeration system, including the choice of working fluid, operating temperatures and pressures, the determination of flow rates, plus the preliminary design of compressors and expansion devices
- design a gas liquefaction plant
- help set up facilities for a wind farm and a photovoltaic power plant
- help set up a biogas plant.

Needed prerequisite

Thermodynamics.

Form of assessment

The evaluation of outcome prior learning is made as a continuous training during the semester. According ot the teaching, the assessment will be different: as a written exam, an oral exam, a record, a written report, peers review...
