Rational use of energy

Objectives


At the end of this module, the student will have understood and be able to explain (main concepts):
- the concept of rational use of energy
- the carbon footprint
- the concepts of Pinch analysis
- the concepts of energy and exergy balances, and life-cycle analysis (introduced in 4th year chemical engineering) will be especially developed by considering different possible applications.    The student will be able to:
- establish a life-cycle analysis on energy production processes and different energy use scenarios by using a software (Umberto) and the appropriate databases,
- calculate carbon footprints of processes or activities
- use the Pinch analysis for improving energy use in processes and buildings
- establish energy and exergy balances for the power industry, preferably chosen frominnovative sectors
- carry out a critical analysis of these methods
- select and justify the most appropriate method(s) for the analysis of a system
- identify malfunctioning in a system and propose optimal solutions.

Form of assessment

The evaluation of outcome prior learning is made as a continuous training during the semester. According ot the teaching, the assessment will be different: as a written exam, an oral exam, a record, a written report, peers review...
