Mobiles Networks and Wireless Networks

Presentation

The communication architecture and functioning of the mobile and wireless networks will be presented. The student will learn:

- the principles of cellular architecture for mobiles and wireless networks

-design and deploy the mobiles networks and the enterprise wireless networks

-the specificities of wireless networks and their impact on network architecture.

The radio interface and it impact on network architecture will be presented in detail. The optimal voice and image coding for mobile and wireless networks and the information (voice, data, multimedia) transmission over the hole network will be teach. The power management dedicated to mobile and wireless networks will be presented in detail.

 

 

 

Organization:

Lectures will be given about mobile and wireless local (WLAN) and personal (WPAN) networks, information coding and transmission and power management in these networks. Supervised exercised are proposed on these topics. Laboratory classes are proposed to illustrate the main concepts:

-the deployment of mobile and wireless networks

-the functioning of mobile networks (2nd and 3rd generation), of WPAN and WLAN

-power management

-voice and multimedia data coding for mobile and wireless networks

Lectures slides, exercises and laboratory specifications will be given to students.

Objectives

At the end of this module, the student will have understood and be able to explain (main concepts):

Mobile networks (2nd and 3rd generation – GSM to UMTS) and wireless local and personal networks  functioning and deployment principles and their communication and network architecture

The student will be able to:

-understand the cellular architecture of mobile and wireless networks

-design and deploy a mobile cellular network

-handle the communication and network architecture of mobile networks, the roaming and handover principles

-handle the radio interface and its impact on the design of the network architecture

-understand the voice and image coding for wireless mobiles networks

-understand the information transmission (voice, data, multimedia) in mobile and wireless network

-understand the energy management and the principles to adapt the emission power in wireless and mobiles networks

-identify the specificity of wireless local and personal networks and their effects on the network architecture

-handle the main functioning principles of local and personal wireless networks

-design and deploy an enterprise local wireless network

Form of assessment

The evaluation of outcome prior learning is made as a continuous training during the semester. According ot the teaching, the assessment will be different: as a written exam, an oral exam, a record, a written report, peers review...
