Geotechnic 1 (Engineering geology - Soil physics)

Programme (detailed contents):

 

Engineering geology : stratigraphy, tectonics - geological cartography, mechanical and physical investigations - applications.

Soil physics : basic characteristics and classification of soils - introduction to seepage - consolidation theory, settlement - elements on strength of soils.

 

Organisation:

 

This teaching rests on a dynamics of progress based on knowledge, methods and techniques of the field.

 

 

Main difficulties for students:

  • data analysis;
  • layout of the intrinsic curves;

take into account the theoretical relations.

Objectives

At the end of this module, the student will have understood and be able to explain (main concepts):

 

To know and understand subjections and risks related to the nature of the formations for the various branches of the civil engineering.

To acquire fundamental knowledge concerning the physical, hydro dynamical and mechanical properties of soils.

 

The student will be able to :

- to identify grounds and materials for their exploitation

- to carry out a simple study of soil mechanics behavior (consolidation, compressibility, shear strength, constraint and deformation under load)

- to analyze an underground hydraulic flow (forces of flow, folding back)

Form of assessment

The evaluation of outcome prior learning is made as a continuous training during the semester. According ot the teaching, the assessment will be different: as a written exam, an oral exam, a record, a written report, peers review...
