Mechanical Design Project

34h workgroups, 8h practicals

The students carry out function analysis, brainstorming, kinematics studying, sizing and CAD modeling via project teamwork.

The students get necessary knowledge for the project using documents from moodle, books and the internet.

Organisation:

• Along the project, the students have to prepare short presentations.
• An exercise booklet enables the students to test their knowledge
• Technical drawing reading exercises are carried out

Combustion engine principles are explained using technical documents and real engines

## Objectives

At the end of this module, the student will have understood and be able to explain (main concepts):

The student will be able to carry out a design process for a simple mechanical system, from functional specifications.

The student will have a basic knowledge of combustion engines.

The student will be able to:

Mechanical Design Project:

• propose kinematic solutions for given functional specifications
• Evaluate power requirements and choose a motor
• Design and size a simple gearbox
• Design and size an assembly with radial ball bearings
• Assess static indetermination of a fixed or mobile assembly
• Model a mechanical system using CAD software
• Write a report and defend a presentation
• Participate in a team project
• Identify proper assembly conditions for a ball bearing joint

Combustion Engines:

• know 2 stroke and 4 stroke principles
• understand timing systems and air/fuel feeding
• know the difference between turbofan and turboprop
• be able to identify components of an alternating engine from an overall drawing
• know accessory systems (cooling, lubrication, electrical generation,...)
• know the terminology

## Needed prerequisite

SI/CAO: I2ICCAO11

• kinematic modeling, static determinability, radial ball bearing design rules, technical drawing basics, CREO CAD basics

Math and mechanics: I2ICMT11

• ability to determine forces using equilibrium principle for simple systems.

## Form of assessment

The evaluation of outcome prior learning is made as a continuous training during the semester. According ot the teaching, the assessment will be different: as a written exam, an oral exam, a record, a written report, peers review...
