# Mechanics and materials science

## Presentation

Programme (detailed contents):

Materials science: The different kinds of materials (metals, semiconductors, insulators, ceramics, polymers), the structure of materials (ordered, disordered, crystalline, amorphous, etc), the main physical properties of materials (mechanical, electrical, optical, magnetic, piezoelectricity), the main characterization methods and techniques (structure, morphology, X–ray, SEM, REM), the main field of applications of materials (aeronautics, microelectronics, MEMs, sensors, etc).

Mechanics : vectorial calculation reminder; kinematics; kinetics, dynamics; second law of Nexton, theorem of kinetic energy

## Objectives

At the end of this module, the student will have understood and be able to explain (main concepts):

Materials science: the main physical properties, and particularly mechanical ones, of the different kinds of materials (metals, ceramics, polymers, etc) with the use of the microstructural properties.

Mechanics: understanding the behaviour of a moving solid subjected to external actions.

The student will be able to:

Materials science: describe the physical properties of different kinds of materials with the use of the microstructural properties and to give examples of different fields of application.

Mechanics: to parameterize a moving solid in the space; To apply the Newton’s laws to moving solids.

## Needed prerequisite

Materials science: mathematics, atomic structure. Mechanics: mathematics (derivation, intégration, PDE), point mass mechanics.

## Form of assessment

The evaluation of outcome prior learning is made as a continuous training during the semester. According ot the teaching, the assessment will be different: as a written exam, an oral exam, a record, a written report, peers review...
