Mechanics and materials science

Objectives

At the end of this module, the student will have understood and be able to explain (main concepts):
Materials science : the main physical properties, and particularly mechanical ones, of the different kinds of materials (metals, ceramics, polymers, etc) with the use of the microstructural properties.
Mechanics : the main concept in Continuum Mechanics: strain, stress; the physical signification of a conservation law, of the corresponding partial differential equations and their limit conditions.
The student will be able to:
Materials science : describe the physical properties of different kinds of materials with the use of the microstructural properties and to give examples of different fields of application.
Mechanics : Solve simple 2D problems in elastostatics and fluid dynamics; have a good overview of the industrial problems in Contiuum Mechanics.

Needed prerequisite

Materials science: mathematics, atomic structure.
Mechanics: point mass mechanics.

Form of assessment

The evaluation of outcome prior learning is made as a continuous training during the semester. According ot the teaching, the assessment will be different: as a written exam, an oral exam, a record, a written report, peers review...
