Sensors and measurement physics

Objectives


At the end of this module, the student will have understood and be able to explain (main concepts):
- The classes and the operating principle of the main sensors used in
pharmaceutical, food processing, oil, and environment industries
- The basics of electronic processing of a signal coming from a sensor as well as the
nature and function of the various blocks in an acquisition path.
- The basics of wave optics and their implementation in measurement
techniques.
- The basics of programming and the functions of an Excel spreadsheet. The
related tutorials allow the learning of these functions and apply them to a topic covered in lessons (optics and electronics).
The student will be able to:
- Grasp the concepts of wave optics in order to understand scientific instruments
based on optical waves (microscopes, spectrometers,¿)
- To define and interface sensors with their electronic signal processing unit
and identify needs in terms of filtering, amplification and other signal processing
requirements.
- Choose the most suitable sensor for a given measurement.
Use the Excel spreadsheet for scientific calculations or to treat the results of
measurements using its graphic facilities.

Basics of geometrical optics
Basics of electro-kinetics and fundamental theorems about electrical circuits.

Form of assessment

The evaluation of outcome prior learning is made as a continuous training during the semester. According ot the teaching, the assessment will be different: as a written exam, an oral exam, a record, a written report, peers review...
