Transmission systems and techniques

Programme (detailed contents):

-       Noisy transmission channels: impact of the physical channel on the transmission and reception of a (mostly, digital) information-carrying signal; signal degradation by the channel; primary means to enhance transmission reliability.

-       Error-correcting codes: linear codes (overview), cyclic and convolutional codes, concatenated and turbo-codes.

-       Modulation / demodulation: building a transmission system based on a microcontroller.

-       Antennas and models for RF transmission: essential characteristics, choosing an antenna given the expected radio coverage; conceiving common types of antennas; RF signal transmission to the antenna; main radio propagation models for terrestrial environments.

-     Lectures about general principles and theoretical knowledge.

-     Seminars about dimensioning real-life channels and antennas.

Labs: signal processing for modulation and RF transmission, antenna design and characterization.

At the end of this module, the student will have understood and be able to explain (main concepts):

-       How the properties and limitations of channels influence transmission

-       The different perturbation sources

-       The properties of most antennas

-       Modulation and demodulation techniques

-       Coding and error-correction techniques.

The student will be able to:

-       Identify the limitations of a channel and how they alter the signal

-       Build a model of a transmission channel, so as to conceive an adapted and optimized transmission link

-       Dimension an antenna, taking into account the propagation setting

-       Use a STM32-type microcontroller to carry out numerical modulations (BPSK, QAM, …) in a software radio setting.

Form of assessment

The evaluation of outcome prior learning is made as a continuous training during the semester. According ot the teaching, the assessment will be different: as a written exam, an oral exam, a record, a written report, peers review...
