Introduction to PDE and numerical models - Structural mechanics


Beam theory :

- from the real system to the beam model,

- Static mechanics,

- Internal forces: normal and shear forces, bending and torsional moments,

- Stress / Strain / Displacement fields and elastic strain potential energy relative to each type of internal force.

At the end of this module, the student will have understood and be able to explain


  • the mechanical behaviour of isostatic beams under static loading:

-  beam modelling (geometrical properties, external connections, loading),

-  external reactions and internal forces,

-  stress, strain and displacement fields relative to the different types of internal forces,

-  elastic potential energy.



  • the skills for solving ordinary DPE.


The student will be able to:

-  model an isostatic beam under static loading,

-  calculate reaction forces, internal forces and stresses, displacement field and elastic strain energy stored in the structure,

-  solve ordinary DPE theoretically, thanks to separation of variables, and numerically, thanks to the finite difference method.

Form of assessment

The evaluation of outcome prior learning is made as a continuous training during the semester. According ot the teaching, the assessment will be different: as a written exam, an oral exam, a record, a written report, peers review...
