Materials science and Electromagnetism


Programme (detailed contents):
The teaching is divided into two parts: firstly, an introduction to the materials science and related applications; secondly, an introduction to Electromagnetisme.

Part I: Introduction to the physical properties of materials
 Introduction / Atomic Structure / Structures and ordering in condensed matter / Phase diagrams / Mechanical properties of crystalline materials / Ceramics / Polymers / Electronic properties of materials and their applications (electronic, thermal and optical properties).

Part II: Electromagnetism
 Induction phenomena.
 Maxwell's equations in vacuum.
 Electromagnetic wave propagation.
  Plane waves. Electromagnetic energy.
 Energy propagation.

Part I:
 22.5h lecture with course material given to students (handout), alternating with 12.5h of tutorials.  
Part II:
  Courses (20h) + Tutorials (5.5h)

Main difficulties for students:

Part II:
 Gaps in linear algebra and vector.
 Gaps in Euclidean geometry.
 Lack of logical-deductive mind to simplify a problem to achieve equated concrete physical problems.


At the end of this module, the student will be able to:
 Describe the main macroscopic properties of materials (mechanical, electronic, thermal, magnetic, dielectric and optical) and identify their origins in terms of structural arrangement and electronic structure.

  Introduce the essential elements of classical electromagnetism theory, covering Maxwell's equations, electromagnetic waves, static field equations, inductance
 Identify the relevant variables of a magneto-static problem, and electromagnetism at variable regime.
 Simplify a problem to be able to calculate useful physical quantities.
 Geometrize in 3D any electromagnetism problem in static or variable regims.
 Extract all the physical properties of an electromagnetic wave from the Maxwell equations.

Needed prerequisite

Part I : No necessary knowledge.
Part II : Electrostatic courses (INSA first year)- Linear and Vector algebra-  Euclidean geometry.

Form of assessment

The evaluation of outcome prior learning is made as a continuous training during the semester. According ot the teaching, the assessment will be different: as a written exam, an oral exam, a record, a written report, peers review...
