Programme (detailed contents):

Thermodynamic properties of the ideal gas state. State equations and residual quantities of real fluids. Transfer properties (viscosity, thermal conductivity, molecular diffusion in fluids). Phase equilibria in multicomponent non-ideal mixtures. Introduction to the use of fluid property software (Prophy). Graphical description of phase equilibria and Interpretation of corresponding diagrams.

 

Organisation:

Lectures where the fundamental notions are highlighted, followed by tutorial exercises which illustrate and apply the presented concepts. A second series of tutorial exercises is also provided to practice the use of fluid property software (Prophy).

 

Documents:

Duplicated lecture notes and tutorial exercises, including the personal works. Handbook of the main thermodynamic properties for pure components. Three books written by the teaching staff are available from the library of the establishment.

Objectives

At the end of this module,

1)     the student will be able to write and use the thermodynamic models and correlations leading to the determination of fluid properties as well as the calculation of enthalpy, entropy and fugacity in multiphase mixtures.

2)     The students will then be able to apply these concepts to phase equilibria (liquid-vapor, liquid-liquid, et demixing) in order to characterize the main limitations and the efficiency of different unit operations (subject of 4th year courses).

3)     The students know how to use Prophy software to determine fluid properties and equilibrium conditions for both single components and mixtures.

Form of assessment

The evaluation of outcome prior learning is made as a continuous training during the semester. According ot the teaching, the assessment will be different: as a written exam, an oral exam, a record, a written report, peers review...
