Objectives

At the end of this module, the student will have understood and be able to explain (main concepts):
the main concepts of the finite element method to solve structure sizing problems in the linear domain

The student will be able to:
- build and assemble the elementary operators for a class of basic elements (bars, beams, plane elasticity...)
- analyse the strength of a mechanical part subjected to static or dynamic loads using an industrial code.
- model a real problem by choosing a relevant number of well suited elements and by applying appropriate boundary conditions.
- to know the limitations of the method and the precautions necessary to obtain reliable results
- to critically analyse the quality of the solution which  known numerical phenomenon can deteriorate.

Needed prerequisite

Solid mechanics (I2ICMG10 - I3ICMG20)
Continuum Mechanics (I2ICRM11)
Beam theory (I3ICRM21)

Form of assessment

The evaluation of outcome prior learning is made as a continuous training during the semester. According ot the teaching, the assessment will be different: as a written exam, an oral exam, a record, a written report, peers review...
