Music–Studies Section

THE MUSIC–STUDIES SECTION AT INSA TOULOUSE

Since its creation in 1999, the Music–Studies Section has provided student musicians with the opportunity to pursue their engineering studies alongside individual and collective musical practice. Led by orchestral conductor Laurent Grégoire, the section comprises around 40 students averaging 10 years of musical training and regular instrumental or vocal practice. Students undertake their individual instrumental or vocal training in public or private specialized teaching institutions or through private lessons. At INSA Toulouse, students take part in collective projects in partnership with:

and with the support of:

ADMISSION

The Music–Studies Section is reserved for admitted students who can demonstrate at least 5 years of regular instrumental or vocal practice and sufficient autonomy to participate in various ensemble projects. Students may have reached the required level either in specialized teaching institutions or through private lessons. Students may join the Music–Studies Section from the 1st year; those who transfer to INSA in the 2nd or 3rd year or are already studying at INSA Toulouse may apply to join the section.

Application procedure:

  • To join the Music–Studies Section, students must first be admitted to one of the INSAs
  • Submission of applications: January to March

Once the student has been admitted and has confirmed joining INSA, his/her artistic file is examined, which must include a résumé (detailing the candidate’s instrumental or vocal experience and musical background) and a cover letter.

If the application is successful, the candidate will be invited for an interview to take place early September.

“Confirmed Artist” status: Some candidates already pursue high-level artistic activities, or even semi-professional careers. A special application procedure exists to identify and nurture talents that require special follow-up.

EDUCATIONAL PROJECT

Practical training

  • Personal training: at least one 30-minute lesson per week or a 1-hour lesson every two weeks, in the student’s institution of choice (Toulouse Conservatoire, Music’halle, community music schools, private lessons, etc.). Students must inquire personally about the application procedure. The cost of these lessons is borne by the student.
  • On-campus practical workshops (chamber music, ensembles, contemporary music, improvisation, film concerts, etc.): supervised by professional musicians, in close connection with composition and distribution (30 hours per year).

Theoretical training

Each student has the opportunity to pursue a personalized cultural pathway (as part of the INS’Art program) based on the cultural offer of various venues in Toulouse (concerts, opera, film concerts, etc.).

Artistic practice is assessed and recognized as part of the curriculum under the relevant UF. Students may schedule their studies over a period longer than 5 years if their artistic training project so requires.

Sports–Studies Section (S2E)

Balancing engineering studies and high-level sporting activities

The Sports–Studies Section was created in September 1990. More than 300 high-performance athletes have been accepted into the various departments at INSA Toulouse since then, 70 of whom are currently training with us. These athletes can plan for their professional future while working towards sporting success.

Please note: high-performance athletes (SHNs) are considered as such when they are included on official ministerial lists of athletes (elite, senior, young, up-and-coming, training partner) or when they work under agreement at a training center approved by the Ministry of Sports.

PROFESSIONAL FUTURE

The balance between studies and high-level sport can continue into the students’ professional lives. Employers who recruit these athletes greatly appreciate their adaptability, rigor and time management skills. Their personal development and success at every level turn them into ideal brand ambassadors sought-after by companies.

ADMISSION

The INSA Admissions Committee carefully considers applications from high-performance athletes who are included on official ministerial lists, in accordance with the amended law of 16 July, 1984 on the organization and promotion of physical and sporting activities.

Only high-performance athletes included on official ministerial lists (elite, senior, young, up-and-coming, training partner) are eligible, or those who work under agreement at a training center approved by the Ministry of Sports.

After the admissions committee has convened, candidates are notified of:

  • The outcome of their application to INSA through the online application site
  • The outcome of their application to the Sports–Studies Section by the INSA Sports Center in Lyon.

If their application to join the Sports–Studies Section is rejected on the grounds of insufficient sporting ability, the candidate will be notified by the sports center. In this case, the candidate’s application will continue on the regular INSA program.

Candidates not included on official ministerial lists who nevertheless demonstrate a sufficient sporting level and outstanding results may still apply for and be admitted into the Sports–Studies Section.

EDUCATIONAL PROJECT

The scientific curriculum is identical to that of the regular INSA program.

  • 1st year: For a specific group of high-performance athletes (comprised of 24 students), lessons are adapted to suit sporting deadlines; study arrangements include support classes, remedial classes and deferred examinations. Personalized tutoring is also provided. Schedules are organized to facilitate sports practice.
  • 2nd and 3rd years: Personalized arrangements are implemented to balance sporting and academic commitments, including schedule adjustments, extension of studies, and deferral of examinations.
  • 4th and 5th years: Each specialization department prepares a curriculum tailored to the student that accommodates sporting and academic deadlines.

From the 1st to the 5th years, INSA may consider postponing admission or granting a one-time interruption of studies.

SPORTS TRAINING

Supervision and technical training are provided by:

  • National sports facilities (Pôle France, Pôle Espoir) based in Toulouse to train high-performance athletes
  • Clubs in the Toulouse region
  • University training centers

TRAINING

To bring these projects to fruition, INSA Toulouse works with the following partners:

  • The Ministry of Sports
  • Sports federations
  • The Midi-Pyrénées Regional Council
  • The Regional Directorate of Sports
  • Clubs in the Toulouse and local regions
  • Local sports personalities

Framework agreements have been signed with professional clubs in Toulouse and their training centers, as well as with Pôle France and Pôle Espoir of various sports disciplines based in the Midi-Pyrénées region.
